What’s uncouth?
un·couth ən-ˈküth
Uncouth is an adjective that can be defined as awkward and uncultivated in appearance, manner, or behavior; lacking in polish and grace; strange or clumsy in shape or appearance.
To put it simply, it’s having bad manners.
The purpose of Stop Being Uncouth
Let’s face it, etiquette and basic manners are on the decline. We’ve got folks in grocery stores open mouth coughing, coworkers showing up to a client happy hour in leggings, dogs jumping on tables in restaurants, friends showing up to housewarmings empty-handed, and worst of all–thank you card sales are at an all time low.
Perhaps it was COVID-19’s impact on social intelligence and empathy. Maybe it’s that you cannot easily search basic questions like “what do I wear to a baby shower?” because internet search engines, like Google, have become AI-centered and thus have lost all nuance. Maybe the film Idiocracy correctly predicted we’re all getting dumber. Regardless of the cause, it’s clear: We all need a little refresher on etiquette.
Why are manners important? Well, to quote George Costanza–we’re living in a society. Having good manners makes you a better friend, colleague, and family member. It fosters strong communication skills. It connects you with your community. It strengthens compassion. To put it frankly, having better etiquette betters you.
I hope Stop Being Uncouth’s blog posts and TikToks help you when you’re in a pickle and need to know questions you didn’t know you had until moments before you must walk out the door, such as can I wear open-toed heels to an interview? I know I can’t wear white to a wedding, but what about an engagement party or baby shower? I want to introduce myself to my neighbors but I don’t know if they drink, have dietary restrictions, or have pets–what the heck do I bring?
